“Commitment is what transforms a promise into reality. It is the words that speak boldly of your intentions. And the actions which speak louder than the words. It is making the time when there is none. Coming through time after time after time, year after year after year. Commitment is the stuff character is made of; the power to change the face of things. It is the daily triumph of integrity over skepticism.”
“Your life changes the moment you make a new, congruent and committed decision.”
Welcome back and compliments of the season. I hope that – you have had some time to ‘pause’, reflect, recharge and connect with your loved ones. And, very importantly, connect with yourself to determine what actions you need to take to ensure 2018 is a great year for you.
We all know that a new year and new year’s resolutions don’t change anything unless you are truly committed. For me, that’s really what the symbolism of a new year is… it is a chance to re-assess and determine what I am committed to doing and being to ‘be the difference that makes the difference’. I often reflect on the following extract that I’d like to share with you as we start our journey of Key Steps through 2018 together…
Until one is committed there is hesitancy,
the chance to draw back,
Concerning all acts of initiative (and creation),
there is one elementary truth,
the ignorance of which kills countless ideas and splendid plans:
That the moment one definitely commits oneself,
then providence moves too.
All sorts of things occur to help one that would never otherwise have occurred.
A whole stream of events issues from the decision raising in one’s favour
all manner of unforeseen incidents and meetings and material assistance,
which no man could have dreamt would have come his way.
I have learned a deep respect for one of Goethe’s couplets:
“Whatever you can do, or dream you can, begin it.
Boldness has genius, power and magic in it.”
— WH Murray, from The Scottish Himalayan Expedition —
Powerful, isn’t it? So, I ask you again… What are you committed to? Pick up a pen and paper (or open a Word document) and jot down what you want to achieve this year and – very importantly – what are the first steps you need to take to start achieving your goals. Maybe it starts with ordering healthy groceries online (I do this and it’s a great help) so they are delivered while you are at work. Maybe it’s enrolling in a class to learn new skills you need to achieve your goal. Maybe it’s as simple as putting a jug of water on your desk. Maybe it’s putting your phone off when you get home (or at least for a little while to connect properly with your family). It’s up to YOU to take Key Steps to make 2018 great (whatever ‘great’ means for you). Take the first step today and…
